The Defender of Wessex (871–899 AD)

King Alfred the Great(Asked in Exam) was the King of Wessex from 871 to 899 AD. He was born the youngest of five brothers, but history thrust the fate of the nation upon him. During the 9th century, the Danish (Viking) invasions were systematically destroying the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Alfred is historically celebrated because he prevented England from falling completely to the Danes.

He achieved this through sheer military brilliance and structural reform. During a massive invasion, he famously hid in the swamps of Athelney (where legendary folklore says he accidentally let a cowherd’s wife’s cakes burn while deep in thought). Emerging from the swamps, he defeated the Danes and instituted profound reforms: he built fortified towns called burhs, commissioned coastal warships, and divided his army into two rotating groups to ensure constant agricultural and military readiness. He ruled justly, often seeking the advice of the Witan (the council of elders).

The Father of English Prose

However, Alfred's greatest contribution to literature occurred during peacetime. Because the Vikings had destroyed so many monasteries, Latin literacy was rapidly dying in England. Inspired by his own youth (where he memorized an entire book of English poetry to win a prize from his mother) and his admiration for Charlemagne’s cultural revival, Alfred initiated a massive educational reform.

Alfred believed that all freeborn men should learn to read. Since they no longer knew Latin, he personally encouraged and participated in translating crucial Latin texts into the vernacular (Old English). Because of these sweeping educational reforms and his dedication to the native language, Alfred is universally known in literary history as the "father of English prose"(Asked in Exam).

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle

Beyond translating the works of others (like Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica and Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy), Alfred oversaw the creation of a monumental historical project around 890 AD.

He commissioned the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a year-by-year record of English history written entirely in Old English. This chronicle was distributed to monasteries across the kingdom to be continuously updated by monks, serving as the most vital historical record of early Britain.

Exam Trap Alert: Another Misattributed Quote

A Note on Exam Reality: Your study notes highlighted the quote: β€œIf a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties.” Please be careful! We caught this exact same quote in the Beowulf section. Exam boards love to recycle this Sir Francis Bacon quote from 1605 as a distractor option in multiple Old English matching questions. Do not associate this quote with Alfred the Great or the Anglo-Saxon period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Alfred called "The Great"?

Alfred is the only English monarch to be universally known as "The Great." He earned this title by single-handedly preventing the total destruction of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms by the Danish Vikings, negotiating peace, and rebuilding the nation's military, legal, and educational infrastructure from the ground up.

What exactly did Alfred do to earn the title "Father of English Prose"?

Prior to Alfred, almost all serious intellectual work in Europe was written in Latin. Realizing that Latin was dying in England, Alfred initiated a massive educational reform. He personally gathered scholars and encouraged the translation of vital Latin theological and historical texts directly into Old English prose so that his people could read them in their native tongue.

What is the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle?

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is a collection of annals (year-by-year historical records) written in Old English. Commissioned by Alfred the Great around 890 AD, copies were sent to monasteries across the kingdom. Monks continuously updated these records for centuries (some until 1154), making it the most important primary source for early English history.

What are "burhs"?

Burhs (or burgs) were heavily fortified, defensive towns built by King Alfred across Wessex. They were strategically placed so that no citizen was ever more than a day's march from safety. This brilliant defensive network completely neutralized the lightning-fast raiding tactics of the Vikings.
