The Survival of Old English Literature

Because the Anglo-Saxons initially relied on oral tradition, and because paper did not exist (texts were written on expensive animal skin vellum), only a tiny fraction of Old English literature survives today. Furthermore, the destruction of the monasteries during the 16th century (under Henry VIII) led to the loss of countless texts.

In fact, almost all surviving Old English poetry is preserved in just four major manuscripts. Memorizing the details of these four books is absolutely essential for competitive exams like the UGC NET.

The Beowulf Manuscript (Nowell Codex)

The most famous of the four is the Nowell Codex, commonly referred to as the Beowulf Manuscript. It is a highly tested fact that the Beowulf Manuscript was written c.1000 AD(Asked in Exam) by two anonymous scribes. However, it was lost to history for centuries.

It was not until the modern era that the Beowulf Manuscript was discovered in 1705 AD(Asked in Exam) in the library of Sir Robert Cotton. Tragically, in 1731, a massive fire swept through the library, heavily damaging the edges of the manuscript, leaving some words forever unreadable.

The Exeter Book: Riddles and Elegies

The largest and perhaps most diverse collection of surviving Old English poetry is the Exeter Book, preserved in Exeter Cathedral(Asked in Exam). This manuscript was generously donated to the cathedral's library by Bishop Leofric around 1050 AD, where it safely remains to this day.

The Exeter Book is famous for containing nearly 100 Anglo-Saxon riddles, alongside some of the most profound and melancholic elegies in the English language, including "The Wanderer," "The Seafarer," and "The Wife's Lament."

The Junian Manuscript and The Vercelli Book

The remaining two foundational manuscripts are deeply rooted in religious poetry:

  • The Junian Manuscript (c. 1000 AD): Found and published by Franรงois Du Jon (Franciscus Junius) in 1655 (often cited historically regarding his work in the 1680s). This manuscript is unique because it is entirely illustrated. It contains biblical paraphrases traditionally (though inaccurately) attributed to the poet Cรฆdmon, including Genesis, Exodus, and Daniel.
  • The Vercelli Book: The location of this manuscript is a historical mystery. It was inexplicably discovered near Milan in 1832(Asked in Exam) in the cathedral library of Vercelli, Northern Italy. How an Old English book ended up in Italy remains unknown (likely carried by a pilgrim journeying to Rome). The Vercelli book contains crucial religious poems including Andreas, Cynewulf's Elene, the masterpiece The Dream of the Rood, and several prose homilies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does so little Old English poetry survive today?

Very little survives because the Anglo-Saxons were primarily an oral culture. When monks finally wrote the stories down, they used vellum (animal skin), which was expensive and highly susceptible to fire, dampness, and rats. Furthermore, Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s led to the tragic destruction of countless ancient libraries.

What happened to the Beowulf Manuscript in 1731?

The Beowulf Manuscript (Nowell Codex) was housed in the famous Cotton Library in London. In 1731, a devastating fire broke out. The manuscript was saved by being thrown out a window, but its edges were scorched and singed. Over the next century, before it was properly preserved, the brittle, burnt edges crumbled away, destroying several words on the outer margins forever.

How did the Vercelli Book end up in Italy?

The Vercelli Book is an Anglo-Saxon manuscript containing poems like Andreas and Elene. It was discovered in Vercelli, Italy, in 1832. While historians are not certain, the most widely accepted theory is that an English pilgrim or church official traveling on the Via Francigena (the main pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome) left or donated the book there in the late 11th century.

Who was Bishop Leofric and why is he important?

Bishop Leofric was the first Bishop of Exeter. Upon his death around 1072 AD, he donated his personal library to the Exeter Cathedral. Among the books donated was "one large English book on poetic subjects." This book, heavily protected by the cathedral for a thousand years, is the Exeter Book, preserving massive works of literature that would have otherwise vanished.

What kind of literature is in the Junian Manuscript?

The Junian Manuscript is highly unique because it is an illustrated volume containing Old English poetic paraphrases of Old Testament biblical stories, specifically Genesis, Exodus, and Daniel. Because it focuses on biblical creation, earlier scholars incorrectly assumed these were the lost poems of Cรฆdmon, the first English poet.
